What is SitePopularity?
[Top]
SitePopularity is a Windows software program which checks a list of URL's for backlinks and different ranking criterias. Among those criterias are PageRank, Alexa Traffic Rank, Dmoz listing and backlinks which are checked for using these search engines: Google, Yahoo, Altavista and AlltheWeb. The results appear immediately in the program. Look on the main page for the entire list of features found in SitePopularity.

Does this program contain ANY malware
? [Top]
SitePopularity is, and always will be 100% free of all kinds of harmful code such as spyware, adware and viruses. If you don't like the program you can always uninstall it without risking any kind of harm to your system.

Windows 95/98/2000/2003 Server/ME/XP/Vista
128 MB of RAM (256 recommended)
Internet connection

Windows XP Service Pack 2 [Top]
Users running Windows XP with Service Pack 2 installed have been limited to only using 10 connections by Microsoft. It's possible to circumvent this limit by running an unofficial patch found at http://www.lvllord.de/?url=tools#4226patch
Remember that this is a third-party patch and it's only recommended for seasoned computerusers.

How do I start it?
[Top]
After you have installed it, open your start-menu and click on 'Programs', under that tab you will see a group called 'SitePopularity Shareware'.

How do I use it?
[Top]
It's very simple to get started using SitePopularity thanks to the Quick Start Wizard which automatically presents itself when you open the program. Follow the instructions of the four steps which the wizard tells you to do and click on 'Finish' when you are ready to start. Next a new window called 'Safesearch' will appear, it will explain what it does and you can chose to either activate or deactivate safesearching (activating it makes the program work a little slower).

After you have done this the program will start checking the URL's that you have added to the list. It will stop as soon as it is done and you can of course observe the progress in real-time while SitePopularity is working.

Now you should have the results of each of the websites in the list. Now click on the button 'Saving' in the menu, there you can chose how to save the results. When you are done with that click on 'Save' to export the results (however that function is disabled in the free Shareware).

How do I save the results?
[Top]
First of all click on the button called 'Saving' in the button menu in the main window. There you will be able to define which URL's that should be saved, based on a few different patterns. After you're done close that window and click on button to left of it called 'Save'. The results will then be instantly saved to the file that you specify.

Why should I purchase the full version?
[Top]
The free Shareware version has some limitations compared to the registered full version. All these limits will be removed when you purchase the full version. For a list of the limitations please see the buy now page.

URL list
[Top]
The URL list in the main window displays the list of websites that you have added to the program. You can double-click on any URL to edit it or you can right-click on the list to add a new one. You can also get each individual page of searchresults by right-clicking on an URL, this is useful if you would like a little more in depth information about the sites linking back to the website in question. If you want to import a large list you can do that by using the 'Import' button, if however the list is comma-separated then it's important to load them by clicking on the little triangle right of the 'Import' button. Lists from Pool.com must be imported by using the later method.

Settings
[Top]
The program configuration can be changed under the tab 'Settings' in the main window.

Connection
The number of connections used by the program determines how fast it should process all URL's. The more connections being used the faster the program can operate. You can use as few as 1 and as many as 100. Remember that not all connections can handle 100 simultaneous connections, and if that happens the results may timeout or be displayed as grayed erroneous results. The 'Retry' function will try a failed result X times until it gives up and moves on. 'Timeout' is of course how long it takes before a connection should time out due to not receiving any response.

Links and ranking
If 'Google Pagerank' is checked then each website will be checked for Google Pagerank. If 'Yahoo backlinks' is checked then each website will be checked for Yahoo backlinks, and so on.. You must have at least one of the options enabled.

Proxy
Normally the use of proxies is not necessary, but if you want or need to use them then the option is here for you. Remember that all of the proxies must be of the HTTP type. They can be running on any port though. A list imported must be separated with standard Windows linebreaks and each proxy must be in the format of 'host:port'.

URL extraction
When this function is enabled then each of the websites in the list will be visited by SitePopularity, and each link found on each one of the pages will be extracted and added to the list. The program will dig deeper and deeper as defined by the 'Maximum depth' setting. It will also start visiting other websites if links are found to them, you can avoid this by enabling 'Stay within domain'. The two comma separated fields are each connected to the option button above them. And they will only be used if you actually enable the option button for the field in question.

Safesearch
This is a very useful function if you are not in a great hurry. Sometimes when you query a search engine many times from the same IP it will get tired of you temporarily block you from making any queries. If this happens to you the program will appear to stop working and you will not get any results at all from the search engine. Safesearch can help you avoid this problem by using less connections with a pause between them, this puts less pressure on the search engine and you are much much less likely to get blocked.

More
Here are some settings which doesn't really fit under any specific tab.

The first one keeps the Quick Start Wizard from appearing when you start the program. The other one keeps the Safesearch window from popping up.

The last setting is a little more complex. If a Dmoz listing result is a subdomain of the topdomain that was being checked for, then consider that URL to be listed in Dmoz.

What is Google PageRank?
[Top]
Google PageRank is a website ranking system developed by Google to measure the popularity of a specific website URL. The scale stretches from 0-10 where 10 is the highest.

What is Alexa Traffic Rank?
[Top]
Alexa Traffic Rank is a ranking system developed by Alexa (www.alexa.com) which measures a sites popularity by the number of visits it receives from users that have installed the alexa toolbar on their computer. The highest ranking a site can get is 1, the second highest is 2, and so on.

What is a Dmoz listing?
[Top]
Dmoz (www.dmoz.org) is the internets largest human-edited directory listing close to 5 million sites in nearly 600,000 different categories. It's a fairly good indication of a quality site if it's included in Dmoz, it also will be listed in hundreds of other websites which copies Dmoz. Therefore you are pretty much guaranteed to get more visits to your site if it's listed in Dmoz.

Why isn't the MSN search engine used by this program?
[Top]
The MSN search engine used to be supported by SitePopularity, but since late 2007 Microsoft decided that they didn't want anyone to be able to check for backlinks using their search engine. Since then it has been disabled. There are still ways to get results from the search engine but these results are very unreliable. Therefore we decided to remove it all together.

It won't start, it says I'm missing some file?
[Top]
If the program says that you're missing an OCX or DLL file then download and install this file from the Microsoft website (restart your computer after you have installed it): Runtime library
If it still won't work then contact us and tell us what file that you are missing.

The Automatic updater always times out or can't connect? [Top]
Make sure that you have set your firewall to allow the Automatic updater to access "www.site-popularity.com" on port 80, so that the updater may connect to that site in order to check for updates. It's not necessary to enable the Automatic updater for the program to work, but it really helps to keep SitePopularity up to date if you wanna get good results.
